Choosing a colour for your wedding can be a huge headache for many couples.
Your
wedding colours will set the tone for your big day. They are the
integral signature that brings all of the elements of a wedding
together, from the invitations and bridesmaid dresses right through to
the venue styling and the cake!
There
is an extensive and never ending spectrum of colours and tones to
choose from, so where do you start? How do you make a choice and stick
to it?
I
have compiled a list of things to consider that can help narrow down
the choices to help you arrive at the perfect colour or colour
combinations for your big day.
1. Choose a prominent life colour.
A good starting point is do you have a favourite colour or are drawn to
certain colours? If you are unsure of this, a good way to find out is
to take a look at your wardrobe and your home furnishings and
decoration. Do you see a common colour or common set of colours? It
is important to look at the colours you’re drawn to and the things you
like on a day to day basis. Your wedding should reflect you and your
likes and style as ultimately it is a day that is all about yourselves
as a couple.
2. Discuss with the Groom.
Yes, I
really have just said that! Although it is true that lots of Grooms are
happy to just turn up on the big day and not have anything to do with
the planning (and that’s fine with many Brides), but since it is a big
day for you as a couple, you should ask him his opinions on the colour
choice. He may be very adverse to some colours and the reasoning (if
they are anything like my husband) can purely be down to not wanting a
colour that represents the rival football team to the one that they
support. (Red was a colour that was a no-no for my husband).
Alternatively, he may not be fussed by exactly which shade of green you
choose, be it forest green or emerald green, but he also might not be
thrilled with the prospect of having his entire day filled with vibrant
Barbie pink!
3. Take a good look at your venue.
If you have opted for a country manor which is decorated in rich ruby
and emerald tones then canary yellow may not be the best option.
Remember you chose this venue for a reason, so try not fight the way it
is presented. If your colours compliment you venue, this can save money
on venue styling done by yourself as the colours of the venue can
enhance your decorations and bring everything in together.

4. Look for inspiration.
If
you are still really struggling for a colour choice, now would be the
time to physically start looking for inspiration from those in the know.
Create a scrap book from things that inspire you. Wedding magazines are
full of colour ideas and styling inspiration. Cut out images you are
drawn to, collect swatches, and over time, you may see that you are
drawn to a colour without you realising. If a physical scrap book is not
your thing, create a virtual one on www.pinterest.com. Be warned
however, that collecting inspiration can be both very addictive and time
consuming.
5. Stick don't change.
Finally, once you have chosen a colour, STICK WITH IT. I know this is a
very scary decision to make, but if you keep changing your mind, you
will end up leaving all of your wedding planning until the last minute
and end up very stressed!
6. Choose the Rainbow.
If all else fails or you are just feeling greedy, go for the rainbow! -
nobody said you couldn't have it all!! Choose bridesmaid dresses in
different colours, have a multi-coloured bouquet and venue styling (this
style can look gorgeous if you are bold and daring!)
